The Old Gardener’s Journal#

Theme: A narrative about the patience required to grow food.

Mr. Thomas was a master of horticulture. When he bought the farm, the ground was wild and hard. It was not yet arable land. He had to reclaim the field from nature. Day after day, he worked with a heavy plough to turn the soil, and a hand spade to dig deep. Finally, he used a rake to make the earth smooth and ready.

Thomas knew how to cultivate a garden perfectly. He would wait for the right time to sow every seed. He knew that the weather would fluctuate—sometimes hot, sometimes cold—so he had to be patient. He watched the soil daily, waiting for the seeds to germinate. Soon, green life began to burgeon from the ground. He was careful to choose the right plants; he planted short-day crops for the winter and shade-tolerant plants under the big trees.

Spring was his favorite time. The trees were covered in white blossom, and the garden began to flower. Every rose bush was in full bloom, waiting for the bees to spread pollen. The air was filled with a sweet scent because the garden was full of aromatic plants.

Summer turned into autumn, and the sun helped the crops ripen. The trees began to fruit, promising a high yield. At last, the harvest arrived. Thomas went out to pick the apples and carefully pluck the delicate berries. He gathered a bundle of firewood and cut a beautiful bunch of flowers to put in a vase on his table. It was hard work to rear these plants, but the seasonal rhythm of the garden brought him great peace.
